1968 AMC AMX: Clever Car From Creative Carmaker

The AMX was the American Motors Corporation's (AMC) 1960's muscle car. With a 6.4-liter V8 engine, the AMX made 315 horsepower and hauled from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds. Like today's Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang GT, the AMX was a popular performance car rental in the 1960s, a car you could rent for a raucous weekend trip. 

Hamstrung by tighter budgets than its big Detroit competitors, AMC found clever ways to maximize what it had. This AMX, for example, is basically a chopped-down version of AMC's Javelin pony car. This 1968 example features a body-on restoration, just short of a full rotisserie restoration. In 1968, this car cost $3,245 brand new; today you'll pay mid-high $20,000s.

This nicely restored 1968 AMX recalls an era when the smaller car held its own with its Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet competitors. Its 6.4-liter V8 made 315 hp and helped the AMX dash from 0-60 in 6.6 seconds. 

The AMX was also a popular "rent-a-racer," a car you could rent on Friday to zip around on the weekend, then return on Monday.

American Motors Corporation didn't have the size or resources of Detroit's Big Three — Ford, Chrysler and Chevrolet — but the company's engineers and designers made the most of what they had. 

The AMX, for example, is essentially a smaller version of the Javelin pony car, with a shortened rear end and no rear seat.
